Every Friday morning at 4:45 AM, a determined group gathers at the Mt Maunganui Surf Club. Their mission is simple but profound: push for that elusive “1%,” challenge personal boundaries, and embrace the discomfort of a pre-dawn start. Participants can choose to walk, jog, or run—whatever feels right for them—but the shared goal remains the same: to start the day with purpose, surrounded by a supportive community.
The 445 Club, born in Auckland three years ago, began as the vision of Lucy, a New Zealander now based in Australia. Since then, this movement has spread across New Zealand, Australia, and beyond, creating pockets of early risers in cities around the world. Four months ago, it found a new home in Mt Maunganui, where it has steadily grown, drawing 50-60 participants each week—even through the winter chill.
As the days lengthen and the sun makes its early appearance, organizers are excited to see how summer will change the dynamic, anticipating even more people drawn to the idea of an invigorating morning run, followed by a refreshing dip in the ocean.
For many, the highlight of 445 Club is the people. It’s a gathering where, whether you're running or simply enjoying a coffee, there’s an undeniable sense of camaraderie. This “little community,” as some call it, is about much more than exercise. It’s a blend of conversation, friendly banter, and the shared triumph of rising before dawn to greet the day together.
So, if you’re up for a challenge, an early coffee, and a community to set the pace with, the 445 Club at Mt Maunganui Surf Club is there each Friday morning. Come ready to move, laugh, and start your day with a boost—one that only a 4:45 AM start can deliver.
